Be afraid, be very afraid – the Government is coming for your guns

Self-defence and protection of property will not be a valid reason for gun ownership.

The new draft Bill amending the Firearms Control Act that allegedly has been leaked, will make it almost impossible to own a firearm.

Gun Owners South Africa (Gosa) has released the Bill. According to The Citizen, the Record’s sister publication, this “follows a Constitutional Court finding in June that gun ownership is not a fundamental right under the Bill of Rights. ‘It is a privilege regulated by law under the Firearms Control Act’, Justice Johan Froneman wrote at the time”.

Most disturbing is the fact that self-defence, and the protection of another person or property will not be deemed valid and satisfactory reasons to apply for a firearm licence. This Bill will also severely affect the R2,2 billion hunting industry.

In a statement released by Gosa on Wednesday, 17 October, they wrote the following: “The major concern we have is the right to life of law-abiding citizens. Crime is escalating at an alarming rate, whereby the criminals perpetrating these crimes are becoming increasingly violent. Taking away a means to effectively defend oneself will see an increase in violent crimes committed against all South Africans, [and] this cannot be allowed to happen.”

Of course one of the biggest concerns is that for all practical reasons the public will be defenceless against criminals who will still obtain guns illegally. It will also strip citizens of the right to defend themselves against their own government, should it become tyrannical.

DA Member of Parliament, Dianne Kohler Barnard, also allegedly confirmed seeing the leaked document.
