Baking and selling sweet treats to raise funds for cancer sweethearts

A number of Cupcake Angels took over 14th Avenue District Shopping Centre on National Cupcake Day this day in support of children with cancer.

One of the 79 malls nationwide who hosted the Cupcake Angels was the 14th Avenue District Shopping Centre, which was turned pink on National Cupcake Day in support of children with cancer.

Every year, thousands if not hundreds of thousands of volunteers right around the country get together to do their part in support of cancer treatment for children. The Cupcake Angels behind the non-profit organisation Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer have been raising funds for treatment for children with cancer since 2009, but the first National Cupcake Day was only held 2012.

Ever since, the initiative has simply grown from strength to strength, and this year was held in a record 79 malls with the hope of surpassing last year’s total raised of R1,8 million by raising more than R2 million this year. The immense efforts by the teams at the 79 malls paid off, as an astonishing R2 065 807 was raised nationwide, a brand new record for the organisation.

Marquerit van der Merwe and Jessica Gordon hosted their first National Cupcake Day event this year, and were behind the team at 14th Avenue. The incredible efforts by their volunteers ensured the team had more than 3 000 cupcakes to sell on the day. They started setting up as early as 7am, and kept selling their cupcakes till after 5pm.

A large portion of the cupcakes provided came from Beanies for Beans, who also received the remainder of the cupcakes that weren’t sold on the day.
