Local businesswoman receives kick start from Shoprite

Only businesses with less that a R 1 million turnover qualified for competition.

Mukundi Lambani from Roodepoort wanted to speak her native language of Tshivenda more fluently, but couldn’t find an accessible way of learning, so she created Ambani – an online African language and culture tutoring platform for young and old.

Ambani offers one-on-one tutoring sessions as well as digital content such as audio books, with the goal of promoting and preserving African language and culture.

She is one of 36 small business owners who received a cash injection and marketing support valued at over R70 000 as part of Shoprite’s Hustle competition. The competition was open to all small business owners with an annual turnover of less than R1 million.

Ambani makes content available in the user’s preferred African language. With the boost received from Shoprite, Mukundi hopes to develop more African stories and create more animated content, invent games to help children learn and design an app where all the content can be housed and easily accessible for all.

Mukundi believes that business can be created out of what you know and love. “I hope that Ambani will help people to find employment as a result of their African knowledge,” she said.
