Pamphlet distributors might be scouts

Vigilance remains key to outsmart criminals.

This past week Kruin Community Voluntary Association (KCVA) has picked up on a new tactic that criminals might use to establish which homes they are going to target.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday (19 September) thugs attempted to steal bicycles from a house on Lotus Street in Roodekrans but a vigilant neighbour sounded his alarm and the intruders fled before the security company arrived.

What should be noted though is the events earlier the day. The same vigilant neighbour, who happened to be home during the day, saw a number of men delivering pamphlets in the street. He noted that they loitered, looked into yards and even returned to some houses.

It is believed that these men were scouting for targets, either for themselves or on behalf of other criminals.

With this in mind, KCVA has urged residents to —

• do their best to outwit the scheme with vigilance, awareness, instinct and early reporting

• take note of the demeanour of flyer deliverers or any other pedestrians, and drivers of unknown vehicles. When they are spotted loitering or returning to addresses, or conducting multiple drive-bys, immediately report them to the neighbourhood watch or security company

• try to note as much detail of suspicious persons as possible. This will allow for accurate and prompt response, but will also provide valuable identification evidence in the event of an arrest

• be vigilant when at home or driving around • trust their instincts
