New kickboxing club opens doors in Roodepoort

'You are never too young or too old to start'

The HWA-Steve Eden Training Centre has officially opened a new kickboxing club which will be headed by Sensei Antoinette Visser.

Antoinette has been active in kickboxing since she was 14 years old, and is currently a 1st Dan black belt. She has competed in the South African Championships three times, winning two silver and one gold medal. Under the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (Wako) banner, she has represented South Africa against Mauritius and Canada, where she won one fight and lost one. She has also been awarded provincial colours, and in 2016, she qualified as an instructor.

“My aim at the club is to share my knowledge with the younger generation, and to help them grow and achieve. Kickboxing is a very good sport for instilling respect and self-discipline, and it is also good for self-defence. If all goes well, I would like to open more clubs,” she said.

Steve van Eeden, the Honour Kickboxing Academy (HKA) manager, echoed these sentiments and added, “At the moment we only have kickboxing classes, but I am definitely planning to add a few other classes as well, that will be focusing on anti-bullying, cardio classes as well as dedicated self-defence classes.”

Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 8pm and the club is situated at the Roodepoort City Hall, Berlandina Street, Roodepoort.

Steve concluded by saying, “Anybody from ages eight and up is welcome to join us. You are never too young or too old to learn how to defend yourself.”
