The 1st Discovery Scout Hall hosted its second blood drive for the year, and was very well supported.
According to Cindy McCloughrie, an Assistant Pack Scouter, she chose the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) as her service project, and explained, “I have quite a few health issues and ended up in the Intensive Care Unit. I needed three pints of blood and ended up only receiving one. It was very sad for me that I have always been able to donate, but when I needed blood, there was not enough. That is why I decided to find out if I could host regular blood drives as it would not only benefit me, but a lot of other people as well.”
She said that when she contacted the SANBS, they were happy to assist, and their first blood drive was held on 6 July. “With our first drive we managed to collect 12 units,” said Cindy.
The second drive collected 18 units, and Cindy attributes this to the fact that they also had some food on sale. “We decided to sell some curry and rice to make it easier for the donors, so they would not have to worry about preparing dinner after supporting the blood drive. This is something that we will definitely do again at the next drive,” she said.
According to Cindy it will be an ongoing project, and they will host at least four drives a year. The next drive will be on 16 November.
