Five arrested for attempted murder

On Thursday, 6 September five suspects were arrested for the attempted murder of a Pikitup general manager.

The five were part of the group of protesters picketing outside the Pikitup offices since Monday, 3 September, demanding that they be employed by the City’s waste management company.

It is alleged that on Monday, the suspects assaulted the manager, doused him with petrol and threatened to set him alight. Fortunately, the victim was able to escape.

The matter was reported to City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service (GFIS) Department. The Hawks, the police and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were subsequently notified.

Early on Thursday (6 September), the manager was able to positively identify the suspects, who are known to him, from among those picketing outside Pikitup’s offices. The suspects were arrested on the scene and are being detained at the Hillbrow Police Station. They are expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon.

“I would like to thank our law-enforcement agencies who jointly worked to apprehend the suspects. I pray that the authorities in our criminal justice system will ensure that the suspects meet the full might of the law. No one is above the law,” City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba said.

“The City will continue to engage with our law-enforcement authorities so as to provide all support needed to secure a conviction,” he added.
