#JusticeForLee WATCH: Supporter vents frustration in court room after yet another postponement

Accused abandoned his bail application

The recent court appearance of the accused in the missing Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor case took another surprising turn, which left family and friends hopeful.

The 29-year-old Onke Hartin Mashinini, who stands accused of child neglect, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice as well as premeditated murder, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court again on 27 August, when he was supposed to apply for bail.

When the accused appeared in the dock, there seemed to be some confusion between the Magistrate, the State Prosecutor and the Defence as to why Mashinini was appearing in Court J, because the Magistrate had received an indication that they would be abandoning the bail application.

Mashinini’s legal representative, Advocate Twala confirmed this, and said that, after reading through the transcripts of the previous bail hearing, no new facts could be found to base a new application on. The case was then referred back to Court F.

While waiting for the accused to appear in Court F, a community member, who has been attending the court cases in support of the family, became quite emotional, when he voiced everyone’s frustrations.

When Mashinini appeared, the Magistrate, Judge Hawkins, postponed the case to 10 October, to allow the police to complete a list of outstanding investigations, as indicated by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mashinini will remain in custody until his next appearance.
