The accident took place early on the evening of Tuesday, 28 August, when a taxi slammed into a motorcycle which in turn slammed into another vehicle. The accident took place at the pedestrian crossing on Ontdekkers Road in front of Westgate Shopping Centre. Bystanders, have alleged that the taxi driver was intoxicated and started assaulting the injured motorcycle rider, but tow-truckers intervened and stopped the fight. The rider said he was scared to open a case in case the taxi driver got hold of his address and came after him.

Bystanders said that strangely enough, both the police and the Metro Police then encouraged the rider not to open a case, and although the taxi driver seemed to be under the influence, did not test him.

Spokesperson for the Metro Police, Wayne Minnaar, said that even if the rider did not lay a complaint, any member of the public who was present and felt that the Metro Police members did not do their job could lay a charge with the Metro Police’s Internal Affairs Department. They can be contacted on 011 490 1797.
