Women’s walk shuts down Ontdekkers Road

COJ officials took a stand against female harassment in the workplace.

Yesterday marked a special day in the history of Roodepoort as female officials from the City of Johannesburg embarked on a walk to raise awareness and stop gender-based violence and discrimination against female officials.

“Male drivers tend to take advantage when they are stopped by a female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers. They don’t address female officers with respect; they call them by names such as Baby, Sweetness, Honey, Love and so on. That attitude and mentality should come to an end.

When you see a female officer, respect the uniform that she is wearing and address her with respect,” said JMPD spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane.

About 2 000 uniformed and non-uniformed female officials from various departments within the City of Johannesburg, such as JMPD, Emergency Management Services (EMS) and Disaster Management took part in the walk. The walk started from the Florida Fire Station and continued all the way to JMPD headquarters in Martindale near Sophiatown, where a memorandum to highlight issues such as harassment and for equal opportunities in the workplace was handed in.

Traffic on Ontdekkers Road came to a standstill and motorists were advised to reroute to alternative roads. Some of the residents and companies situated on the route stopped working and came out to watch what was happening on the road.
