Wi-fi the newest ruse under which criminals pounce
Do not allow them in without an official appointment.
Criminals are opportunistic creatures by nature and like to prey on situations that are new to residents, in this case the roll-out of Wi-Fi technology.
The regular presence of the employees of these service providers might have made residents just a little less vigilant as to strangers in their neighbourhoods. Now Roodepoort Police have warned that criminals operate under the cloak of being technicians that need access to your home to do installations. Domestic workers might be overwhelmed by these smooth operators’ ‘tech jargon’ and let them in only to fall prey to a robbery or similar crime.

According to Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Sergeant Violet Mogale, domestic workers must first check with homeowners if any such appointments were made, ask for legitimate identification and/ or call the police if they are still unsure.
The police can be reached on 10 111. Also keep the relevant CPF or neighbourhood watch’s numbers at hand.
