Record journo a Miss Curvybody SA finalist

Lungi is also a Miss Plus-Size Soweto finalist

One of our very own journalists, Lungi Ndimande, is competing for the crown of Miss Curvybody SA and Miss Plus-Size Soweto.

The 27-year-old, who grew up in Lindhaven, has always been reminded of her size by everyone around her. “While growing up, I was always teased about my weight and size, and my nickname at school was Sara Baartman. This resulted in a very low self-esteem, and I had to learn to love and accept myself before I could expect others to love and accept me,” Lungi explained.

She added that the main reason for entering the pageants is that she wants to stop plus-size women being bullied. “There is a stigma surrounding women who are a bit bigger and by entering these pageants, I want to motivate them to have confidence in their bodies and realise that not only skinny people are beautiful,” she said.

It would mean a lot for Lungi if she won the titles and to be an ambassador for the #notobodyshmingandbullyingsa campaign. “If I were to win, it would enable me to teach young girls and women that they are beautiful, no matter their size. I would also like to motivate and encourage them to love themselves and be comfortable in their own skin, and be proud of how they were created,” she said.

The Record wishes Lungi the best of luck with the rest of her journey.
