Two Roodie athletes shine during athletics tour

Europe treated them well

Two learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort – Layla Harmen and Thato Mashego – formed part of the Split Seconds Elite Athletics tour to Europe.

They visited Switzerland, France and Germany, and participated in various international meetings, and also had the opportunity to meet many international athletes, including South Africa’s Caster Semenya.

Layla, who received a gold medal in the 400m sprint, said, “It was an amazing experience and definitely an opportunity of a lifetime. I never imagined that I would be competing at an international level, let alone walking the streets of Europe. I will forever cherish the memories of this experience. I have already started implementing my learning to further my athletics journey.”

Thato’s achievements included a seventh place in the 100m sprint, a third and a seventh place in the 400m sprint, a fourth place in the triple jump and a first place in the high jump.

“My experience in Europe was amazing. The places there are beautiful, their technology is so advanced! Being in Europe opened my mind to so many possibilities for my future, my goals and my dreams. The people in Europe encouraged me to perform at my own best. They never discouraged me,” Thato concluded.
