Don’t fall into arrears with your rates

If any money is owed to us, we will apply credit control action.

In a recent media statement, the City of Johannesburg stated that no credit control action will be taken against the property owners who objected to the value of their properties in the new 2018 General Valuation Roll before the objections have been finalised, provided that their accounts are in good standing as at 30 June.

According to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, councillor Funzela Ngobeni, just over 50 000 property owners objected during the objection period and the objections are now being investigated and finalised.

“Objectors should note that if their accounts are not in good standing, credit control action will take place. If any money is owed to us, we will apply credit control action,” said the MMC.

He also mentioned that objectors should note that they may pay on the old value until their objections have been finalised. However, they are advised to pay an additional amount for rates every month, since the 2018 market value would more than likely be more than the previous 2013 market value, even if their objections succeed. It is important to note that should the objection not be favourable, the property owners would be held liable for the full debt based on the new value as of 1 July.

If property owners or objectors can afford to pay the full rate payable as per the General Valuation 2018 value, they are encouraged to do so, because their rate accounts will be credited should the objection outcome result in a reduction in market value.
