This is contrary to previous reports, which suggested that they were cash-in transit robbers.
According to the Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Sergeant Juliet Mogale, it is believed that the five suspects overpowered the court orderly and took his keys. Since the security at the back of the court building is tight, and they were wearing civilian clothing, it is believed that they casually walked out the front of the building.
One police officer, who wanted to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, complained that there was only one unarmed court orderly for every 25 prisoners per court.
The fifth robber is still at large and is believed to be on foot.
Anyone with any information regarding the fifth suspect can call the station on 011 279 6400 or 10111.
