Police concerned about calls being dropped
These numbers must be memorised.
Florida Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mpho More has expressed her concern about a claim that a resident in distress received no assistance after dialling both 10111 and 112. She undertook to investigate the claim.
This comes after 25-year-old Kaashifah Thomas was involved in what appeared to have been an attempted hijacking on 14 July. She was returning to her home from Bosmont at about 11pm when the incident took place at an intersection close to Donovan McDonald Old Age Home. She was waiting for the traffic light to change when three assailants appeared out of the blue.

At least one was armed and he started firing shots. Thomas said she was not sure whether he was firing at her or just randomly to scare her. But she managed to flee by driving over a traffic island. When she got to a spot where she felt safe, she called 10111 for assistance but the call was dropped. She then phoned 112 and asked to be put through to Florida Police Station, but again the call was dropped.
The woman said she later discovered that similar incidents had taken place at the exact same spot later the same evening.
Ideally, residents should receive assistance when phoning either of the following numbers – 10111, 112 and 10177.
