Blankets and soup to warm the soul for underprivileged

It has been one of the coldest winters in the Highveld in a long while, and we all need to do our part in helping the underprivileged.

Volunteers from Child Welfare South Africa Roodepoort (CWSAR) made the underprivileged’s winter that little bit warmer when they handed out blankets, clothes and food to more than 100 children. CWSAR was assisted by the phenomenal work done by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, who collect and distribute hand-sewn or crocheted blankets to those in need. They felt the need to donate 67 blankets to the children of Bram Fischerville with CWSAR at the Bram Fischer Multipurpose Centre on Wednesday, 4 July, in an attempt to help them through the bitter winter.

Realising that the number of children would naturally be larger than 67, they made sure that there would be items of clothing handed out as well, for those who weren’t able to receive a blanket. Among the items handed out were blankets, gloves, scarves, jerseys, and beanies, in the hope that their new items of clothing will help keep them warm through one of the coldest Highveld winters in a long while.

The children and the mothers who were able to make the trip to bring their children, were treated to a little ‘goodie plate’ that included a cup of hot soup, a cupcake, a roll, and a few lollipops. All of the blankets were hand-knitted/ sewn by the staff of Cummins Africa and subsequently donated to 67 Blankets before reaching the children in Bram Fischerville.

While the soup provided temporary relief from the bitter cold, CWSAR still needs as many donations as possible from anywhere in any form to ensure the children stay warm for the rest of winter.
