Jozua Naudé primary celebrates a century

'It is a very special celebration for us'

Learners and teachers at Jozua Naudé Primary had the privilege to celebrate the school’s centenary on 18 July, coinciding with what would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday.

“We are so blessed to have celebrated our school’s 100th birthday on the same day as former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday. Even though we are not the oldest school in Roodepoort, we are definitely one of the oldest. It still is an honour to be able to have reached this age,” said school principal, Mzwake Hlatshwayo.

The day was filled with fun activities for the learners, as well as a celebration on the rugby field. There was also a very special birthday cake.

“Since I came into the gates this morning, I could sense the learners’ and teachers excitement, and that is what a birthday celebration is all about,” Mzwake said.

He explained that, even though the school building was only opened on 23 July 1918, the official documents were signed on 18 July, and that is why they celebrate the school’s birthday on this day.

“The school was started by Jozua Naudé, an Afrikaans dominee who wanted to establish a school where children could learn in their mother tongue. We have a rich history and heritage and, even though we changed to an English school in 2009, I want to preserve that. That was the main reason why I fought so hard against the proposed name changes by the Department of Education, as I did not want to be party to killing the dream Jozua Naudé had for this school,” Mzwake said.

He concluded by saying, “The late Madiba said that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world, and that is why we pride ourselves on our commitment to inclusion. We strive to ensure all children access to an education that challenges, motivates and allows all children who pass through our doors to realise their potential in a safe, supportive and happy environment.”
