Pick n Pay and Lions Clubs join hands for food collection
For Mandela Day 2018, FoodForward SA joined hands with Pick n Pay who also roped in several Lions Clubs to lend a helping hand with food collection.
The Lions Clubs of District 410B Zone 1 came together to volunteer their time at Pick n Pay Little Falls from 13 to 16 July. Their participation in the food collection for FoodForward SA forms part of the nationwide initiative launched by FoodForward, in partnership with Pick n Pay, and Nelson Mandela Day.

The nationwide in-store collection weekend formed part of the larger objective, to raise 1 000 000 meals in July this year.
For District 410B Chairman of Public Relations, Sandy van Heerden, the local Lions Clubs’ participation in the initiative was a must. “We are happy to be involved with this project, as we know that the food will be going to those who need it most!” Sandy previously told the Roodepoort Record.

Lions members from the Roodepoort Host, Wilro Park, Helderkruin, Clearwater Cyber, and Weltevreden Park clubs took turns in shifts to do their part during the food collection at Pick n Pay Little Falls. Upon entering the store, customers were handed a packet which had a list of 14 grocery items on the back that they could purchase and donate. The customers would then place whichever item(s) they were prepared to purchase and donate in the packet they received, and then drop the packet in the donation bin when exiting. According to Pick n Pay Little Falls’ Customer Service Manager, Ambra Jardim, they had already collected two bins full of food by midday on Saturday. The food collection drive continued right through Sunday and Monday, so one can only hope that even more food was collected for the hungry and less fortunate.
