Maths brainiacs invited to show off skills in Japan
The four students belong to Pama South Africa and will be jetting off to Japan next month.
Local braniacs, Jordan Moodley, Yarav Maharaj, Trishaan Maharaj and Tashay Maharaj, are once again going to show off their mathematics prowess. They will be jetting off to Japan to attend the ISDF International Friendship Soroban Annual Training Camp in August.
Pama South Africa, of which the four boys are students, is a non-profit organisation affiliated to the Institute of Soroban Diffusion Foundation (ISDF), which provides a platform and an opportunity for South African children to pit their Abacus and Mental Maths skills against those of their peers from other countries.
The aim of the camp is to enrich students belonging to ISDF as well as to build Soroban friendships around the world with countries such as the Kingdom of Tonga, Brazil, Ghana, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Tunisia, the UK, Indonesia, Australia, Lebanon, the UAE and Ireland. The camp encourages students to improve their Soroban and mental arithmetic (anzan) skills at an intense ‘bootcamp’ and affords them the opportunity to learn from the finest Japanese Arithmetic Masters. The camp also aims to enhance the closeness between the different nations and foster the stepping stones towards goodwill and development through insight and open-mindedness.
“This awesome foursome are eager to represent South Africa at the camp, and although the experience will be exceptional, they understand that there will be a strict schedule and a serious atmosphere that is not to be taken lightly,” said Jordan’s mother, Renate.
Jordan and his family are extremely grateful for the sponsorships they received for his travels from Canon Business Solutions (Daisy Connect), Argantic, Absolute Health and Real Connect. The four students also belong to the A+ Students Noordheuwel branch, which is headed up by Sensei Reeva Maharaj. The A+ students’ programme not only improves the mathematical skills of children but also nurtures self-confidence, concentration and memory retention.
