Jems hands out 100 Jozi Safety Kits
14 areas already benefit from the initiative.
This past Saturday morning (7 July) 100 households of the Jerusalem informal settlement on Hamberg Road received Jozi Safety Kits from Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (Jems).
The recipients have also recently been equipped with basic firefighting skills by Jems, all as a precautionary measure in fighting the scourge of shack fires. According to City spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, “The recipients form part of the Community Emergency Response Team in Roodepoort and surrounding areas. They have already been trained in basic firefighting and basic first aid, with the aim of empowering them to deal with some of the emergencies before we as professionals arrive on scene. This is part of our initiative to build resilient communities that are capable of dealing with any emergency in their areas.”
The kit consists of a parasafe stove (it cuts off automatically when there is excessive movement while cooking to prevent fire incidents), a burn kit to treat minor burns, a rechargeable solar lantern light, a paraffin container with a safety cap (to prevent poisoning incidents, such as young children drinking paraffin stored in cold drink bottles), a smoke detector, a fire retard spray to extinguish minor fires and a 25 litre bucket to store water that can be used to extinguishing a fire.
