Don’t know what to do with your plastic?

The main part of the event involves each team building a raft including a weatherproof shelter, with ropes, poles and barrels, and once completed the teams are required to stay on the water for a full 24 hours.

Help our local 1st Eagles Scout group collect plastic and help our environment stay clean at the same time.

The 1st Eagles Scout group is based in Wipoortjie, and has taken up a challenge to collect different forms of plastic which will be given to the Owl Rescue Centre NPC conservation centre, to make owl houses, bat houses and beehives instead of using wood.

The Scouts took the overall first place at the Gauteng Kontiki Scout the event that was held in Benoni during the weekend of 12 to 14 May.

Kontiki has grown to become South Africa largest annual scouting event, with some 3 000 scouts from 57 Scout groups participating this year. The main part of the event involves each team building a raft, including a weatherproof shelter, with ropes, poles and barrels, and once completed the teams are requires to stay on the water for a full 24 hours.

In addition, there is also a land-based element to the event, in that each team is required to build a campsite, and partake in a cooking competition and various other activities for members of their group remaining on land.

The competition puts their most of their scouting skills to test as well requiring leadership, teamwork and perseverance in order to succeed.
