The 16th 16th FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic took place at the ATKV Buffelspoort recently, attracting cyclists from the across the country.
One of these cyclists was the 15-year-old Nathan Botha, who participated in this race for the second time. “”I felt excited about returning after two years with more skill and experience in mountain biking, and felt ready to tackle the 35km. When I participated in this race two years ago, I finished in 3:54:19, and I challenged myself to complete the next race in under three hours. I am very happy to say that I managed to reach my goal, as I finished in a time of 2:01:46.”

What makes this achievement more special is the fact that Nathan has a congenital heart condition, called coarctation of the aorta. This condition causes the aorta to narrow, restricting the amount of oxygen-rich blood that travels to the lower parts of the body. A 46mm aneurysm was also discovered on the ascending aorta, and Nathan has to take blood pressure medication to prevent the aneurysm from getting bigger. He can also not participate in any mountain bike race without his heart monitor, to ensure that he does not over exert himself.
He said that he enjoyed the new routes during this year’s race, and felt that there were less rocks and more downhill stretches, and said, “Although the race takes you through a very scenic area, I did not really have time to take it all in, as I was very focused on the race and the lines I should take through the rocks. I also reminded myself of my goal to finish my race in under three hours.
“Nathan enjoyed the race very much, but, although the overall experience was a positive one, he had some not so pleasant experiences.
He explained: “The race consisted of many climbs, but the toughest one was the last 10 to 13 metres. The climb got steeper by the second, and I eventually had to get off my bike and walk.

“He said that the best part of the race for him, was crossing the finish line and receiving his medal, as this was proof that he tamed the 35km monster.
He concluded by saying, “I would just like to thank FNB for sponsoring me with the cycling jersey and the cool socks in the goodie bag.”
