Youth Day soccer tournament delights Roodepoort fans

First tournament a huge success

Soccer teams from the Roodepoort Development Project and Euro Soccer Schools played their hearts out during a recent Youth Day tournament.

The tournament saw teams from the Roodepoort Soccer Academy, Roodepoort United and Euro Soccer Schools take each other on in various age categories.

Thapelo Thekiso, the organiser of the event, said, “We are a non-profit organisation, and decided to host this tournament on Youth Day, not only to commemorate the day, but also to show the young people that sport can help change your life. We are focused on keeping them occupied so they can stay off the streets and not get involved with the wrong things, like substance abuse and gangs, to name a few.”

Several 5-a-side games were also played on the day, as well as a netball tournament that saw teams from U/13 to U/17 battle it out for the top spot.

The results did not go the way of the Euro Soccer Schools teams as the U/11 and U/13 teams both lost their respective semifinals in penalty shoot outs. The champions for the U/11 and U/13 teams were Roodepoort Sport Academy.

The U/15 team lost 1–0 to the Roodepoort United team, who were crowned as the champions.

All participants received certificates, and there were medals and trophies for the winning teams.
