Eskom has warned residents to be prepared, as the probability of rotational load shedding, particularly during evening peak times, still exists.
Eskom has requested the public to reduce its power consumption by switching off geysers and all other non-essential electrical appliances, including lighting, between 7am and 10am, and again between 6pm and 9pm daily.
According to Eskom, should it resort to load shedding, each outage would last for a period of up to four hours, depending on the stage.
“Dependent on the capacity shortage, Eskom would conduct load shedding in either Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 or Stage 4. Load shedding is conducted as a last resort, to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout,” the power utility said.
The phenomenon of load shedding came to the fore again after Eskom employees embarked on demonstrations at power plants when they were offered a zero per cent increase. This offer has since been updated, and Eskom has offered a 4,7 per cent increase, which will be considered by the unions.
Even though there is no official load shedding schedule, residents can download the ‘Load shedding notifier’ application on their mobile phones, or visit the Eskom and City Power websites and Twitter feeds for regular updates.
The application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store by clicking here.
