WATCH: Social media ablaze with Florida Midas assault
Video is apparently staged
The video that is doing the rounds showing Midas Florida owner, Jay Govender, allegedly manhandling an employee, was apparently staged.
This is according to Govender, who said if the rest of the video were to also go public, a very different story would be told.
According to Govender, the employee, Themba Ndimande, has been working as a security guard at Midas Florida for the past 15 years. “He is an alcoholic and a drug addict,” Govender said.

He explained what exactly transpired on the morning of 5 June.
“I own a block of flats behind the business. Ndimande has been living there, rent free, for the past 15 years. Ndimande’s 13-year-old daughter was abandoned by her mother soon after her birth, and I have been taking care of them ever since,” Govender said.
He explained that he wants to renovate the block of flats, so as his tenants move out, he does not look for another tenant.
“I told Ndimande about six months ago that he needs to find another place to stay because I wanted to renovate. Every month when I remind him, he makes promises, but he doesn’t make any effort to find alternative housing. I eventually told him that I am going to start deducting rent money from his salary.
“He arrived at work on 5 June, drunk and high, and started swearing at me and threatening to shoot me. He punched me in the chest and shouted that he is going to f&*# me up and he is going to shoot me.
What can be seen on the video is, in fact, me telling him to leave in no uncertain terms.”
Govender said he is very angry about the event and believes that it was a set-up orchestrated by his employee. “If you listen closely, you can hear me shout that he must leave. I do not deny the fact that I grabbed him by the collar.”
Govender said the incident was ongoing for about 45 minutes. “His daughter was behind him filming the whole incident. He kept on asking her if she is getting this on video. He took his daughter out of school to shoot the video,” an angry Govender said.
He added that Ndimande’s behaviour has been ongoing for a long time, and claims that Ndimande has a vendetta against him and often tries to provoke him.
“Ndimande opened a case of common assault against me, but said that he would withdraw the case if I paid him R5 000. That is nothing but extortion. He is, however, still in my employ,” Govender concluded.
Under the watchful eye of Govender, Ndimande denied the allegations, saying, “Govender assaulted me first, after I enquired about the shortfall on my salary. I also deny that I provoked Govender.”
The Record will attempt to make contact with Ndimande to follow up on the allegations.
