Roodepoort church members say no to littering
Tshepo Maseko has a passion for the young people in the country
Local residents and members of the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Roodepoort decided to partner their clean-up campaign with some Youth Day celebrations.
They cleaned up the walkways and streets in and around the church. Their main focus was on one of the walkways on a street corner that is being used by community members as a dumping site. James Dryja, a Ward 84 committee member for the environment said, “After we have completed cleaning up the corner, we will put in a request to Pikitup to provide us with some bins, which will definitely help to keep the area clean.”

He added that the theme for the day was ‘Say ‘No’ to littering’, and, in an attempt to drive this message home, they had an educational session where community members were informed about methods to keep their area clean. The information came from Stella Wilson, the Regional Manager for Pikitup.
Tshepo Maseko, actor and television presenter, also lent a hand, and said, “I am a church member here, and when they said they wanted to do a clean-up on Youth Day, I immediately signed up. I believe government is struggling in terms of service delivery, and we need to lend a hand to help make a difference. We need to keep our environment clean, as we only have one South Africa.
We need to teach our children that to litter is wrong, and to live in dirty surroundings is not right,” he said.

He added that he has a passion for the young people in the country, and he knows that, with the right example and mentoring, they can become responsible adults.
“If there is one thing I could wish for, it would be that government would visit the small towns in our country, and involve the unemployed people living there. Task them with the responsibility of keeping their respective areas clean, reward them with something to eat or a small amount of money, and I can guarantee you that those areas will be kept clean,” he said.

Some fun activities followed the clean-up, in commemoration of Youth Day. Everyone who attended could enjoy playing games, having fun on the jumping castles and much more.
