Why you should stay away from bread

Most bread has sugar in it which causes your blood sugar to spike even higher.

Whether it’s cheese and ham, chicken and mayo or a peanut butter and jam sandwich, most people love eating bread, and do so on a daily basis.

But it isn’t exactly the healthiest food and here’s why you should stay away from it …

Bread does not have many nutrients. White bread is worse because you are not getting any fibre, nor the wholesomeness of grain. While brown bread is a little better, if you’re looking for nutrients, bread made out of whole grain is much better.

Since the whole grains in the bread are broken down into powder, they are absorbed quickly by the body, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. This why bread has such a high G.I. score and why it scores higher than many candy bars.

In one study, people on a lower-calorie diet that included whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, lost more belly fat than those who ate only refined grains, such as white bread and white rice. Whole grains provide more vitamins, minerals, and fibere than refined ones. But overdoing whole-wheat bread can add pounds, too.

Most bread has sugar in it which causes your blood sugar to spike even higher. When your blood sugar goes up, your body has to compensate by storing that extra energy in the form of fat.

It’s not a wholesome, filling meal. Since certain kinds of bread lack nutrients, when you eat them, you might not feel satiated, because it’s not filling! Bread also contains too much salt. Most bread varieties, especially the processed kind that you buy from the supermarket, contain lots of salt. So if you eat less bread, the amount of sodium in your body is significantly reduced. Of course, one slice of bread every now and then won’t do any damage. In fact, you can bake your own bread at home, without adding too much salt.

Bottom line:

Bread is one of the most consumed products in the western world. It is everywhere you look. It is in burgers, sandwiches, wraps and bread rolls. We are often told that whole grain bread is the healthiest part of the day but this could not be further from the truth. Bread in general is just a poor source of nutrients when compared to fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and fish.

The main problem with bread is the fact that wheat has undergone such a change in the last 50 years and our bodies have not adapted to it. Even though bread dominates whole shopping cart aisles, there are many good reasons not to pick it up at all.
