This year’s Danie Voges tournament was well supported and the wrestlers thrilled the crowd.
The tournament, which is hosted by the Danie van Zyl Wrestling Club on an annual basis, was a huge success.
“Compared to last year, this year’s tournament was definitely better supported. Last year we had 92 entries and this year there were 154.
Usually we only use one mat to wrestle on, but this year we had to get another mat, as we received more entries than we expected,” said Ansie Esterhuizen from the club.
She added that 17 wrestlers from their club were entered. They competed in more than one style and brought back 16 gold and four silver medals.

Quite a few of the top wrestling clubs participated in the tournament, including Ruiter Wrestling Club and Wes-Rand Stoeigimnasium.
Juan Nel, the head coach at Wes-Rand Stoeigimnasium, said, “We support the Danie Voges tournament every year by trying to encourage as many wrestlers to enter as we can. This year we entered 29 wrestlers, and they did very well. We won 15 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals.”.
Ruiter Wrestling club had 20 wrestlers who competed and won 10 gold, eight silver and six bronze medals.
The tournament is held in honour of the legendary wrestler, Danie Voges, who was left with brain damage after suffering a massive stroke. A percentage of the day’s proceeds were donated to his medical bills.
