Butchery Shooting: Victim’s condition unclear

Sister fails to respond to calls and messages.

Since 9 May the Record has been unable to get an update on the health of butchery shooting victim Riette van der Merwe. Hopefully it’s a case of no news is good news.

She was shot twice at point blank-range during a robbery at Manny’s Meat Market on 23 April.

Susan Button, her sister, who was in contact with the publication almost daily, has stopped taking calls or answering messages since 9 May. But the last update was positive, with Button commenting that ” the tube that measures her sister’s intracranial pressure has been removed but that the drain in her cranial cavity remains as a precautionary measure. According to the neurologist this means that her condition has stabilised. On the evening of 8 May her temperature was at a normal 36°. She is also attempting to swallow on her own.

“Last night we saw the most positive signs. I spent 10 minutes alone with her and told her I loved her and that I am sorry I had not said it enough.

When I started crying, she opened her eyes and despite being in an induced coma she also started crying.”

The Record and the community are wishing Riette the best.
