Residents meeting regarding mining procedures scheduled for tonight

The meeting is for concerned residents only

The public is invited to attend a meeting to be held tonight about the mining project that is currently taking place at Sol Plaatjes.

The meeting will be held at the Tornado Bowling Club, Tornado Crescent, from 6:30pm.

According to Nadia McIntyre, an occupational health and safety consultant, West Wits Mining is an Australian-based company with its head office in Melbourne, Australia.

The company, as well as SLR Consulting, is in breach of South Africa’s legislation, including the current Constitution, the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1988, the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008, and several sections of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

Nadia is a resident of Florida Park, and said they have felt numerous tremors due to blasting in the area.

Although West Wits Mining has applied for mining rights in Durban Deep and Sol Plaatjes, the application has not been approved as yet.

DA councillor, Gert Niemand, said the fact that the application has not been approved is not a deterrent, as mining operations have already commenced.

The meeting is open to concerned residents only.
