Vikings boxer wins middleweight title

Phumi will now compete in the Elite SA Championships

The 20-year-old Phumelele Cele was crowned as the new middleweight champion during the Gauteng Elite Championships that took place in Alberton recently.

Phumi, as he is known, who boxes at the Vikings Academy in Witpoortjie, won the title in the second round of his fight, after his opponent’s eye was injured by a direct blow. The officials made a unanimous decision to stop the fight and award Phumi the win.

Harry Joubert from the Randgate Boxing Club won a bronze medal, Hardus Jakobs, also from the Randgate Boxing club, won a gold medal and Morgan Hunter from the Krugersdorp Boxing Club won a silver medal.

Phumi, Hardus and Morgan were selected to be part of the Gauteng team that will be competing in the South African Elite Championships that will be taking place later this year.

Phillip du Randt, Phumi’s coach, said, “I am very proud of Phumi, and believe that he will do very well at the SA championships. He is a dedicated boxer, who always works hard, and he is now reaping the rewards.”
