Ruimsig golfer competes for chance to play in USA

Shaun thrilled with opportunity

Eight of South Africa’s amateur golfers will battle it out over 36 holes for a chance to compete in the United States of America (USA) later this year.

The golfers will be competing in the North final of the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, which will be taking place on 22 April at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

The North winner will join the winner of the South final in representing South Africa at the prestigious Junior North and South Championship which will be held in Pinehurst, USA, where former winners include the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

The first four-ball will tee off at 7am and entrance is free to the public.

The line-up includes Shaun Jones, a +3 handicapper from Ruimsig Golf Club who has had the opportunity to play at Pinehurst twice before at the US Kids Championships, as a 10- and 11-year-old. He is very keen to go back to the USA.

Shaun will be joined by fellow +3 handicappers Ryan van Velzen and Warwick Purchase (both from the Benoni Country Club) and Nikhil Gopal (Victoria Country Club). The remaining four qualifiers for the North final are +2 golfer Nash de Klerk (Glendower Golf Club), Jonothan Broomhead (a +1 from Durban Country Club), home club favourite Kian Rose, a +1 golfer and Kiera Floyd (a +1 from Ebotse Links). Kiera is also the only girl who has qualified for the final.

The series is played at celebrated golf courses across the country and is open to boys and girls in the U/13 and U/19 divisions. The first event teed off at Royal Cape in July 2017, setting the standard for tournaments which have attracted bumper fields and some of the country’s best golfers.

The tournament is managed by the South African Golf Development Board (SGDB) and has seen golfers from the SGDB programmes seizing the opportunity to display their talent. “This is only the first year of the Bridge Junior Series and it has already exceeded our expectations. It is all about giving junior golfers opportunities, and it has been particularly rewarding to see the girls and the SGDB golf demonstrating that they do not need to stand back for anybody,” said Paul Stewart, Executive Director at Bridge Fund Managers.
