Sewage killing fish at a local dam
The sewerage spill has been ongoing for more than a month.
“The sewerage spill at the Hamberg Dam has been ongoing for more than a month,” said the Ward 84 councillor, Gert Niemand.
According to resident Marcellus Fynn, the dam’s water is contaminated and flows into Florida Lake.
Niemand has been in communication with Joburg Water as well as Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo about the condition of the dam’s water.

According to Niemand, water tests have already been done and he is awaiting the results.
“Joburg Water has tried three times to gain access to the lower part of Hamberg Dam – the part below the wall – but cannot do so, because the original maintenance gate was completely sealed off with concrete pillars, and the area is no longer accessible,” he said.
In addition he stated, “Joburg Water needs to gain access, the fence needs to be temporarily removed so that the sewerage spill can be solved and thereafter a maintenance gate should be installed. We cannot allow this administrative slip to interfere with proper service delivery. We are heading for an environmental disaster.”
