Couple wants to help the less fortunate
They are urging the community to support them in their project
A couple from Newlands is asking the community to support them in their blanket and tinned food project.
“We are doing a blanket and tinned food project, and our aim is to collect at least 2 000 blankets and cans of food, before winter starts,” said Vicky van Niekerk.
She and her husband, David, started the Blanket and Tin food project in January this year, and she explained, “Our aim is to help the homeless and less fortunate. We want to show them that there are still people who care about them and that they are not alone.”
She added that they would appreciate any support and help from the community, as this will help them to reach their goal. “The community can assist by donating any type of blankets and canned food. There are even some people who donate cash, with which we then buy the items. We will also accept any clothing, as we come across a lot of people who do not even have shoes to wear,” she said.
The couple have a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Blanketandtinfoodproject), and invite all interested parties to visit the page, to see exactly what they are about.
She explained that they drive around during the night, and, when they see someone sleeping on the street, they help them with blankets and canned food. “Our project is going to grow and we want to assist more people with more stuff. At the moment we do not have a specific drop-off point, but people can contact us, and we can arrange to either collect or even for postage,” said Vicky.
