Witpoortjie’s corporate bowling day a huge success

'It was a very successful event'

It was a case of mixing business with pleasure at the Witpoortjie Bowling Club’s fundraising event recently.

George Nysschen, the club’s president, said, “We hosted a corporate bowling day, almost like a golf day, consisting of about 20 teams from various companies who played against each other. The event was held in conjunction with Bowls South Africa, and was not only a fundraising event. We also used the opportunity to expose the businessmen to the sport.”

The companies who participated were Team Mayhem, South African Sports (SAS), Hole in One Boutique, Interfase, Apcan Security, Hair by Maria, Trez Jolie, Southern Business School (SBS), Roodepoort Rugby Club, Distell, 2 Okes Breweries, Mad Giant, Running Dog, Holistic Health, Chef Alex Barnes, Witpoortjie Bowling Club, GTL Plumbing, Uys Displays, Meridean Wines, Spur, Troski and Partners, Fat Bellies Butchery and Pharma-Valu.

The teams played for prizes to the value of R60 000, but, before they were let loose on the greens, they were given a bit of training. George said, “We had to show them how to play, otherwise it would have been chaos!”

There was a festive atmosphere, as players from the various teams loudly – and sometimes with a lot of laughter – encouraged their team-mates.

Christian Heath and Werner Ferreira kept the bowling teams entertained.

In an attempt to help the blind bowlers who will be participating in the National Championships in George later this year, the players also had an opportunity to participate in the spider event, which managed to raise R1 100.

The event did not only consist of bowling, as there was live entertainment from Christian Heath, Werner Ferreira, Mark Belling and Matt Stern, who was also the Master of Ceremonies for the day. “This is a nice day and a great opportunity for people to network as well as to raise money. I enjoyed the day very much, and it was well organised,” Matt said.

After the matches were completed and prizes handed out, everyone enjoyed some delicious meat from the spit and had a chance to reflect on the day.

George concluded by thanking everyone for their support and said, “We appreciate the support from everyone, and want to thank you for your attendance today. Without it, we would not have been able to host such a successful day. I also want to thank Dave Parker from Sables for his support and attendance – it is much appreciated.”
