National Cold Cuts Day

Make yourself a sandwich on #NationalColdCutsDay

3 March is National Cold Cuts Day – a day that was made for sandwich and snack makers.

Some call them lunch meats, deli meats, sandwich meats or cold cuts. Some people like the slices thick, while others stack them mile high. Others like them with cheese and crackers – nothing else.

There is quite a variety of cold cuts available, but the deli staples are the humble turkey and ham. Then there are the culinary delights like salami and prosciutto. Some flavours – like head cheese and braunschwieger – require a more acquired taste .

Whatever your taste, there is a cold cut for everyone – except if you are a vegetarian.

Every nationality has its unique way of seasoning, flavouring, curing and ageing a cold cut. The flavour is altered by spices, smoking and time. The flavour of the

meat is also affected by the time the animal was slaughtered as well as temperature and circulation.

Cold cuts are practically an art history lesson rolled into one, or it can simply be a piece of meat meant to make a meal. Either way, it is the perfect mouth-watering food that can be enjoyed with friends and a good beverage.

One of the most popular cold cuts is bologna – which is similar to an Italian sausage that is also called Mortadella. Some of the other popular cuts include chicken, roast beef, pastrami, corned beef and pepperoni.

To celebrate today, visit your local deli and enjoy some of your favourite cold cuts. You can also search the internet for recipes to make your own cold cuts party salad, dill pickle ham pinwheel, ham rollups and crockpot barbecue ham sandwiches.
