Preschoolers show animals some love
'We are grateful for these welcome donations'
“We are very grateful for the donations received today, every little bit makes a huge difference,” said Senior Inspector Eric Taljaard.
The Roodepoort SPCA was chosen as a beneficiary by the learners from Future Nation Pre-Primary School in Fleurhof, and Felicity Ingram, one of the teachers, explained why.
“We felt the need to instill a culture of awareness that there are needs all around us, and that is why we started this initiative. We wanted the learners to realise that animals – who cannot fend for themselves and have been abandoned – need love and care too.”

She added that, after they explained to the learners what the SPCA was about, their interest was sparked and they excitedly went home to ask their parents for donations towards the initiative. “We received food, blankets, toys, and food and water bowls, and the learners could not wait to hand everything over to the SPCA inspectors,” she said.
The SPCA inspectors used the opportunity to educate the approximately 90 pre-schoolers, and gave a short talk on basic animal care. Inspector Taljaard concluded by urging them not to ignore the warning signs that their pets might be sick, and said, “If you see your pet is sick, ask your parents to phone the SPCA.”
He said that any type of donation – be it blankets, food, newspapers or anything they might be able to use – is welcomed. “For more information, the SPCA can be contacted at 011 672 0448,” Eric said.

Felicity said that they believed this initiative was very important and urged the community not to turn a blind eye. “Hopefully we will be able to carry on with this initiative, so that it can become a long-term project. The community can still drop off any donations at the school, and we will ensure the SPCA receives them. Anything is welcome, including old towels, blankets, pillow cases, newspapers, shoes (which make excellent chew toys for the kennelled dogs) as well as pet food,” she said.
