Residents and motorists offered crime prevention tips
Florida police disclosed the following areas as their current hotspots; Gordon Road and N1, corner 14th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Road bridge and corner 14th Avenue and the N1.
In a bid to raise awareness about how not to become victims of crime, the members of the Florida Police Station communication, social crime prevention, and crime prevention departments embarked on an awareness campaign, distributing about 700 pamphlets in the precinct on 9 February.
Dikolomela disclosed the following areas as hotspots: Gordon Road and the N1, the bridge at the intersection of 14th Avenue with Hendrik Potgieter Road, and the junction of 14th Avenue and the N1.
She warned motorists to be observant, whether their vehicle is moving or stationary and to bear their valuables and surroundings in mind. “Always keep your valuables, including laptops, cellphones and handbags out of sight. Most of the targeted drivers had their valuables visible in their cars. Make sure you lock all your valuables in the boot or behind the seat if driving a bakkie,” she said.
She also encouraged motorists to lock doors and keep windows closed at all times. “Ensure that all your doors are locked and windows are properly closed and never open your vehicle door for a stranger, and also be conscious of your surroundings and suspicious-looking characters.”
Dikolomela also gave tips on what do to when facing a road obstruction. “If you encounter obstacles on the road like rocks or tyres, do not get out of your vehicle to remove them. Rather reverse on the road and drive in the opposite direction.”
“Do not hesitate to report such incidents to the police by dialling 112 from any cellphone, at no cost,” she urged.
She concluded by saying, “When approaching traffic lights at night, slow down ahead of time so that you reach them as they turn green. Also, be wary of people standing at the traffic lights or intersections, because many of them are just looking for an opportunity to pounce on unsuspecting drivers.”
