Breaunanda community members aggravated
Community does not want to fall under City of Johannesburg
The Municipal Demarcation Board (MBD) is planning to change the status of Breaunanda, making it part of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and not part of Mogale City.
The MDB held a meeting at the NG Kerk in Wilro Park on Thursday, 8 February, to discuss the split that exists in the suburb’s status – part of Breaunanda falls into the Mogale City Municipality, while the rest of it is part of the CoJ. The split occurs between Tobie Street and Stokkroos Avenue.

The MDB plans to transfer the entire suburb into the CoJ.
During the meeting, many members of the community raised concerns, saying that they do not want to fall under the CoJ, simply because it fails to take care of the municipal needs of its communities. Members of the community stated that the MDB should leave the border line as it is right now and not change anything. However, if they want to change something, then they should rather transfer the whole of Breaunanda into the Mogale City Municipality.
The community also raised the fact that the meeting was held at very short notice – they only saw the notification on social media the night before the meeting, which meant that the majority of the affected community members were not present at the meeting.

The MDB chairperson, Ms Jane Thupana, said that if it’s not an issue to the community that it is split between two municipalities, then maybe they can leave things as they are.
A second meeting will be held to discuss the issue. The date will be announced in both the Krugersdorp News and the Roodepoort Record.
