Several Roodepoort roads were closed
Protests causes major disruption in Witpoortjie.
Durban Deep residents joined forces with the residents of the Emhlangeni and Matholiesville informal settlements and caused a massively disruptive protest this morning.
Main Reef Road, Progress Road, Corlett Drive and Randfontein Road were closed, as the protesters rage angrily through the streets. The situation is extremely volatile, and it is uncertain what their next move might be.

Members of the police force and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department are on the scene. The Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Sergeant Juliet
Mogalere said,
“We were called out in the early hours of this morning. They have been throwing rocks and stones at us and making threats. My team and I are doing our level best to control the situation.”

The protest has allegedly been caused by recent reports of Durban Deep Primary School providing water contaminated with worms to learners.

Protestors say that this war won’t end until the Member of the Executive Committee for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, comes to address this matter in person.
Community leader, Dumile Nonjani, said, “Our children have not been to school for almost two weeks because of the water and toilet crisis, and we want Panyaza to come face us.”
It’s not certain if this protest will end today. In the interim, motorists are urged to avoid the affected roads.
