Unisa employees down tools
The cost of living is just too high for us to agree to such a low increase.
Registrations, applications and exams at Unisa were disrupted by striking employees for about two weeks, because no wage agreement could be reached between the university and the National Education Health & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu). Students are urged to go online for further details.

Nehawu representative, ET Madingoane, stated that “Unisa will remain closed until we get what we want. The 7 per cent which they are offering us is nothing. The cost of living is just too high for us to agree to such a low increase.

If they can’t give us the 12 per cent increase, we will settle for 9 per cent. We will not agree to anything less than that.”

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela, visited the Unisa main campus in Pretoria, urging the two parties to come to an agreement speedily as he felt the strike had gone on for far too long.
