Bowling club has big plans for new season

Exciting season ahead for bowlers

“We currently have about 60 full-time members, but we would love to increase this number,” said George Nysschen, the Witpoortjie Bowling Club’s President.

He added that their aim for the 2018 season is to not just stay in the bowling league, but to ultimately be crowned as champions. “Last season our first team placed second in the league, and we would love to improve this year,” he said. The league will commence on 27 January.

The club boasts a 15-time National Champion, as well as a number of Provincial champions, and George said, “We also have a blind member, Tracey Smith, who is doing extremely well, and one of our staff members is a junior Springbok, and I am sure he will be awarded his full Springbok colours this year.”

George added that they have Tabs-in bowling every Wednesday at 9.30am as well as on a Thursday from 6.30pm. “These events are very popular with our bowlers and we host a large number every Wednesday and Thursday. We also have the corporate league on Thursday evenings, and it is well supported,”he said.

The club’s first big event for the year will take place on 2 March and George explained that they are very excited about it. “We will be hosting a corporate bowls day, which is almost the same as a golf day, but just with bowling. Apart from the bowling activities, we will also have a spitbraai dinner, live music (including a performance by Mark Belling) and Matt Stern will be the Master of Ceremonies. We will be giving away a total of R50 000 in prizes,” said George.

He said that the biggest misconception people have about bowling, is that it is only for old people. “We have some of the youngest club members, and they have all achieved. I believe you are never too young or too old to start bowling. We have a boy here who started bowling when he was only three, and now, four years later, he shows the potential to become a very good bowler,” he said, smiling.

For those who would like to better their game, or maybe want to learn how to play, coaching is offered, and George said that he is one of the qualified coaches who will always be prepared to assist.

George said that the club’s motto is that they are working for the club and not for themselves, but this has its own difficulties. “We do not receive any funding from our municipality, and everything we do here, comes from our own pockets and is funded from the club fees. It would mean a lot to us if someone could maybe assist in the form of a sponsorship or donation,” said George.

One of the ways that they are supplementing their funds to maintain the club and the facilities, is by hosting bowling golf days. “These are great team-building events, and participants have a lot of fun. The format of the event is very easy, it is bowling in a golf format,” he explained.

He concluded by thanking the club’s and the Sable’s committees for their hard work and support during the past year. “I am looking forward to working with them again this year,” he said. For more information, George can be contacted on 082 979 2003.
