National Blonde Brownie Day
Enjoy this sweet treat on #NationalBlondeBrownieDay
22 January is National Blonde Brownie Day, an unofficial national holiday recognising blonde brownies, which are also known as Blondies.
Blonde brownies are similar to the traditional brownies known and loved by all, but instead of using cocoa, brown sugar is added to give them a sweet-tooth-satisfying molasses flavour.
Most people like to add white chocolate or chocolate chips to their blonde brownies. You can also add other ingredients like nuts, toffee or butterscotch. Because the brown sugar flavour tends to be sweet enough, blonde brownies are usually prepared without frosting. Blondies are sometimes served in sundaes and topped with caramel sauce.
No documentation of the origins of National Blonde Brownie Day can be found, but it is well-known that this light-coloured treat was actually invented in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Recipes for blonde brownies can be found in recipe books dating back into the 1940s – maybe even earlier.
To celebrate today, search online for a recipe or pick one from a recipe book and make your own blonde brownies to enjoy!
