Due to an increase in the number of electricity meters being stolen, City Power has issued a step-by-step guide on what to do when you have been a victim of this crime.
According to the entity, thieves apparently tend to steal several meters in the same street, in an effort to fool residents into thinking that they are experiencing a normal power outage.
Residents are urged, in the event of suddenly being without electricity, to first take the necessary precautionary measures to ensure they are safe, before following these steps:
• The first step is to check whether the outage is affecting the neighbours as well, or contained to a specific house.
• If the outage is only affecting a specific house, the resident should check if the meter has been stolen or vandalised.
• In the event of a meter having been stolen or vandalised, it should be reported to the nearest police station to obtain a case number.
• After receiving the case number, the City of Johannesburg’s Call centre should be contacted on 0860 562 874 to obtain a reference number.
• As soon as all the above steps are completed, City Power will send out technicians to immediately install a new meter (free of charge) and the stolen or vandalised meter will be blocked on the system.
Residents are urged to always check the credentials of technicians before allowing them access to their properties. City Power technicians and contractors must always have their identity cards with them when on duty. Credentials can be verified by calling 011 490 7911/ 7900/ 0504/ 0553.
