What to do if someone has been electrocuted?

You will want to share as much important information with first responders as possible when they arrive, such as voltage, location of contact, etc.

In the light of the tragic and fatal electrocution of Ruan Kruger earlier this week, we will take a look at what should be done when someone is shocked or electrocuted.

• Immediately call the emergency services.

• Approach the victim with caution to ensure the current that incapacitated the victim doesn’t harm you too.

• Examine the scene to determine whether the victim remains in contact with whatever shocked him/ her. Avoid any nearby exposed conductors, and don’t touch the victim until the electrical circuits that power the area have been de-energised.

• De-energise the power source at the plug or if necessary at the breaker box.

• If the power source can not be de-energised, carefully insulate the person by getting him/ her away from the source using a material that does not conduct electricity.

• Rescues are safest when the power is off and you are standing on insulating material. Don’t ever touch an electrocution victim unless you know the source of electricity that incapacitated him/ her is de-energised. If there is a risk of a neck injury or similar contingency, do not move the victim at all. Make sure the victim’s airways are clear of obstructions. Next, check for breathing and a pulse, then provide CPR if necessary (provided you have been CPR-trained).
