Start your day with something sweet on #NationalFrenchToastDay

28 November is National French Toast Day – a day that honours this amazing breakfast delight and encourages you to enjoy it with a few friends.

Apart from a delicious coffee blend, there is another blend making our mornings fantastic – consisting of eggs, milk and cinnamon. We use this blend to dip bread before frying. The savoury sweet smell and anticipation of painting it with butter and drizzling it with syrup is guaranteed to get us out of bed – even on the worst of days! Add a side of sausage and a tall glass of orange juice and it might even be accompanied by a huge smile.

Even though French Toast goes by many names – Eggy Bread, German Toast, Poor Knight’s Pudding, or Bombay Toast – the key ingredients are always the same. Eggs, milk (or cream) and bread. This delicious sweet snack is usually served with sugar or syrup and fruit and consists of slices of bread fried in the egg mixture. The dish is called “pain perdu” in France, which means “lost bread” – because the dish is often made with old or stale bread.

Although it is called French Toast, the dish is not known to have come from France. Some ancient Latin recipes from the fourth century mention soaking bread in milk before frying it. In the 14th century, the term “poor knight’s pudding” was used for the sweet treat in Germany – as it was seen as an affordable meal for the poor. Today, it is eaten throughout the world as either a breakfast meal or a sweet snack.

There is a savoury version in Italy where the egg-soaked bread is sandwiched with slices of mozzarella cheese before it is fried. It is called mozzarella en carozza – literally meaning mozzarella in a carriage.

How to celebrate National French Toast Day? If you have any stale bread in the kitchen, this is the perfect opportunity to use it up. According to the recipe, bread that is at least one day old is the best to use, as it is able to soak up the tasty egg and milk mixture without falling apart. After you’ve fried it up, slather it with as much butter, jam, syrup, fruit or honey as you like, and, if you feel extra indulgent add a swirl of cream on top.
