Ways to fight animal suffering

Education is arguably the most powerful tool for preventing cruelty to animals and it plants the seeds of kindness early.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has said it is imperative that neighbours look out for each other’s animals.

According to Christine Kuch from the NSPCA, without phonecalls from concerned people, the Roodepoort SPCA would not know about many instances of animal abuse or neglect. In addition to being mindful regarding the animals in your neighbourhood, be alert when you travel. Not all instances may be cases of abuse or cruelty but may need some form of action to be taken. It is often an observant motorist who advises of an accident involving an animal, a broken-down vehicle carrying animals or wild animals for sale at the side of a road.

Issues including “nuisance” barking are handled by the Municipality, the illegal sale of fireworks by the Police and the illegal discharging of fireworks by the Metro Police.

The Roodepoort SPCA handles matters relating to cruelty to animals in the Roodepoort/ Florida/ Maraisburg area as well as within Krugersdorp (Mogale City).

Whether you are at the scene of an accident, reporting a fire or giving information on an issue that concerns you – in each instance, response is quicker and more effective if you give accurate details and report the matter directly. Make notes if you can. Note the time, place and exact whereabouts. Every detail helps, especially in an emergency.

A plea is again made not to report serious or urgent issues via Facebook or email. Delays can arise for many reasons. We suggest keeping the SPCA number (011 672 0448) on your mobile phone.

“We are sure you already show your pets the love and good care they deserve. But it is more than just food, water and adequate shelter.

If you think an animal of yours may be sick – see a veterinarian. Be responsible and make sure that all your animals are sterilised. It is so easy to overlook the date of your pets annual vaccinations. Don’t let it happen to you. Also, set a fine example by making sure that your animals are properly identified. Are they microchipped? If you score full marks on all the above, then you have our congratulations and appreciation. Please don’t forget to encourage others to do the same,” Christine said.

Education is arguably the most powerful tool for preventing cruelty to animals and it plants the seeds of kindness early. Young people not only need to learn what they shouldn’t do, but also what they should do. Seeing happy and loving pets also makes a child feel good, which in turn helps him or her to care for animals generally.

Communication includes how your actions are interpreted. What we mean is, taking a child to a circus or other show where animals perform sends the message that it is acceptable or approved by you that animals are put into these situations. Wild animals in the wild and eco-responsibility (taking your rubbish home, recycling for example) are worthy non-verbal messages that you can send.

“Remember that there is no financial support from government and our veterinary hospital is not subsidised in any way. There are many ways in which support can be given in addition to making direct donations. We welcome unwanted items from clothing to toys and bric-a-brac for sale. Taking out a My School card with the Roodepoort SPCA as the named beneficiary costs you nothing. The more support the Roodepoort SPCA has, the more we can do to prevent cruelty towards animals, and alleviate their suffering,” she concluded.
