I would like to think that I am not racist, but….
After this weekend, I have begun to understand why there are people who develop violent, racist attitudes towards our fellow citizens.
Our immediate neighbourhood comprises a small shopping centre/ apartment block with parking, along with three other apartment blocks. Around that circle are houses. Across the way from the stores is a fairly large park.
From early Saturday afternoon, a crowd of folk started gathering in the parking area, most of whom were dressed in party-political colours. At that point it was clear that the local bottle store was doing good business. Toward evening, several more vehicles arrived, increasing the estimated number of carousers on the pavement to 50. That did not include those who preferred the cover of the cantilever outside the shops. Of course no party is complete without music. The louder, the better. This being an open area, the sound was amplified.
This activity was tolerated till about 8pm, and by 9pm, we sought police intervention. We were referred to the Metro Police, disruption of the peace was their field of expertise. No one arrived …Very slowly, these inconsiderate citizens started leaving the pavement from about 10.30pm. You should see the mess they left behind!
This is why I started wishing I had a firearm, to take the law into my own hands.
What, oh what can be done to make it clear to ‘them’ that this kind of open-air gathering or celebration in this area is illegal and certainly inappropriate? The law enforcement authorities certainly did not seem to be interested.
