Six back-to-school tips to start the year right

Tips to ease the transition from holidays to the start of the new schoolyear

Just as you were starting to enjoy your summer holiday, you heard the school bell ringing, summoning you back to the fast pace of the new school year.

But, every new school year affords you the opportunity to make a fresh start, new friends and to make it count.

If you follow these six tips to get you back into school mode, you will have the potential of making this year one of your best ones yet!

• Make sure you have all the school supplies you will need for your classes. Folders and binders with patterns and designs to make taking notes more fun will definitely help you to keep up and stay organised.

• Keep an updated agenda/ diary/ planner, because the school year is a very busy time and you can easily lose track of everything in between taking tests, doing homework, sport and culture activities and attending school events. Using an agenda/ diary/ planner will enable you to manage your time more effectively.

• Knowing your course syllabus and class schedule is very important. Teachers will typically hand out the syllabus in class or post it online, so make sure that you keep it in a safe and convenient place where you can often look at it. You will be able to plan ahead and give yourself proper time to complete every assignment and achieve top grades.

• Do not procrastinate as it can have stressful repercussions. A habit is created in three weeks, so if you study for every course your take for 21 consecutive days, you will form a new habit that will result in a positive impact on your grades and make you a better student.

• Ensure you know exactly what is expected of you. Pay attention to what the teachers say about the workload of the class and what they are hoping for you to take out of it. Communication with your teachers is always the key to understanding their expectations.

• Make a list of the academic goals you want to achieve during the new school year. When you write down every goal, you will be able to plan and realise what you need to do, and prepare for it. That list can be a driving and motivating force to help you achieve those goals.
